Context Awareness

Improving the User Experience

A context-aware mobile phone is one that is able to automatically determine qualities characterising its operating environment. This means that the phone might have, for example, knowledge about the user's current location. With this, the handset has the ability to deliver a customised user experience.

We are overloaded with information. Filtering data based on relevance to the user is absolutely necessary, especially on a limited input device such as a mobile phone. We are now seeing mobile applications that use location to refine search results. Overlay Media's moLocate location technology, for example, can be used to increase the relevance of an internet search.

Location is clearly an important form of context. But what happens when we introduce knowledge of activity, such as walking or driving; or knowledge of who the user is with? What can we build with access to the user's history? Or their likes and dislikes?

It is these kinds of questions that Overlay Media explores. To learn more about what you can do with context, please contact us.
